Teen Volunteer Opportunities

Special Connections

Special Connections is a program sponsored by the Jewish Big Brother and Big Sister League, which matches high school students with adults with special needs  for group activities.   Past activities range from participating in a karate demonstration, making matzo covers and creating a collage of photographs taken at the various programs to watching a magic show and playing jeopardy.  At the end of each monthly program, the group shares a light meal.   The adults have loved meeting their new high school friends and having a chance to socialize outside of their everyday world.  The high school students have shed some of their fears and negative feelings about people with disabilities.  They feel good about themselves and their capacity to connect with people they might not otherwise encounter.  Special Connections meets one Sunday  a month for 2 hours. This is a also a great opportunity to earn community service hours or add something to the college resume.
